Lefties Soul Connection

The Amsterdam collective Lefties Soul Connection gives a new meaning to raw funk & soul with their new album Skimming the Skum. In Europe, but also in countries like Japan and the US, they got a lot of attention because of their energetic, heavy raw music on record and on stage. With the release of Skimming the Skum they definitely earned their place among the best funk bands today. Because of their heavy beat and stompin’ grooves they also gained a lot of fans within the hip-hop and dance community. A large part of their recordings is instrumental. At live shows, though, more vocal tracks are added. These tracks are sung by guitar player Onno Smit, also a soul singer.

The Qualitons

The Qualitons are the freshest summer discovery conceivable, stunning hungaro-retrofunk wrapped in dance craze until the morning hours. The band plays mostly the relics of the sixties and seventies, with authentic instruments and style, decorated with a bit of jazz and excellent solos, turning the whole into something completely new. Their image on stage – red tracksuits and nylon socks – evokes those bittersweet times when funk in Hungary meant the decent Bergendy Band rather than James Brown. This dadaistic approach, the evocation of a living past and faded nostalgia reminds us of the times when we saw craze on the dance floor, and we had our own Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix copies on the stage. This concert will prove to all that what had once existed can be relived now, and even in a more exciting form. A unique colour on the musical palette of Hungary today.

Dance around the torch
Sisso (2009-04-26 19:08:50)

Fáklya Klub (“Torch Club”) has nearly sunk into oblivion amongst the Budapest youth. The once cultural stronghold of the bygone system was first hailed as a scene for retro-parties, and later became a forgotten spot in city entertainment – but the Budapest Soul, Amsterdam beat has succeeded in re-establishing the ambiance of this legendary building, at least for this weekend.
