Dance around the torch Sisso (2009-04-26 19:08:50)
Fáklya Klub (“Torch Club”) has nearly sunk into oblivion amongst the Budapest youth. The once cultural stronghold of the bygone system was first hailed as a scene for retro-parties, and later became a forgotten spot in city entertainment – but the Budapest Soul, Amsterdam beat has succeeded in re-establishing the ambiance of this legendary building, at least for this weekend.
Our photo-correspondent, who happens to play bass guitar in the punk formation Smrgl, has given the highest score for this particular cultural event on the palette of the Dutch Festival and not incidentally. He hasn’t heard of the hungaro-retro funk group The Qualitions before, the band that spearheads the psychedelic Hammond-organ rage and with the resulting music enthralled the audience. ‘Their music is awesomeness‘ is all our photographer added enthusiastically. The band is formed not only by musician members but also an ‘emcee’, who, just like in the olden years of the Cold War, appears from behind the curtains only between two songs and also functions as a stand-up comedian by uttering muchly hilarious or moving wisecracks. Fáklya Klub matches their own compositions recalling the 60’s and 70’s with the true to era instruments, the jazz intermezzos, the great solos, the jovial apparel, the interesting stage solutions, the non-abstract images on screen. Their approach is faultless and they are truly like a Dadaistic saloon dance band.
The Dutch Lefties Soul Connection pleased the audience eager to dance with rock-solid funk. A windfall from the low lands caused much delight again. They produced Rock ‘n’ Roll in their classic arrangement, spicing the event up with a guitar, bass guitar, drum and a Hammond organ while the sweet singer in a baseball cap was singing in both English and Dutch. The Lefties Soul Connection from Amsterdam played some new hits from their latest album ‘Skimming the Skum’, too. So, in our good old club we could dance to the songs that also the US and Japan could enjoy. The best dance floor event ever!
